And honestly, when your garden isn't performing the way you'd hoped, reaching for a bag of something feels like doing something productive.
But here's the thing: in Kitsap County, the standard fertilizer advice you'll find on YouTube, in national gardening magazines, or printed on the back of most product packaging often doesn't apply to us. Our climate, our rainfall, and our soils operate on a different set of rules. And if you're not accounting for that, you might be spending money on nutrients your plants can't even use — or worse, actively making things harder for them.

Myth #1: You Should Fertilize Every Spring, No Matter What

If your native plants look stressed, fertilizer is almost never the answer. More likely culprits include poor drainage, compacted soil, too much sun or shade, or just the adjustment period after transplanting. Save your fertilizer budget for your vegetable beds and containers, where it genuinely makes a difference.
What Actually Works Here
So what should you be doing? A few things that consistently pay off in Kitsap gardens:
